Money in a jar

The only part of post-deployment I don’t like… the jacking up of one’s paycheck.

It seems like it happens with every deployment and sometimes with a PCS.

Times like this it pays to anticipate that your money is going to get messed up. It also helps to plan for it and have a proactive approach. Thankfully we were ready.

Annoying though.

I know the feeling! We just moved offbase a week ago and we’re still waiting for our advance BAH to show up in our bank account. We applied for it almost 2 weeks ago! *sigh* The “joys” of the military.

PS- I tagged you with a blogger award ;)

also, advance BAH For offpost housing? how do you do that? its going to be tight next month and march, because our feb BAH refund from onpost doesn’t come until march 10th, but i have to pay feb and march rent upfront….

veteran military wives, teach us young ones, please! :)

    @ Lina Martin:
we applied for advance BAH in order to pay for our security deposit and first month’s rent so that we could move into the house off base. My hubby went to finance and they gave him the form, then he had to submit it. You have to pay it back and it comes out of the paycheck as an allotment for a year until it is paid back in full. Depending on how much you request will depend on what your monthly repayments are.

This is a huge advantage, because it is an interest free loan. Just be very careful that you will not need that money for bills in the next year.
Its all a little tricky, but hang in there you will learn all the tricks.

Amen sister! It is good that you expect it. Hang in there! Snuggle closer to your guy and it will all go away :) At least for a little while!

Yep, there’s always a pay screw up =). Our last name is really weird, so we actually have a pay mistake almost every month when he’s drilling Guard status. Bureaucracy, how I loathe thee. . . .

They messed up your pay too? They messed up ours. The whole units actually. So frustrating. We also didn’t get FSP until half way through the deployment.

Good to know – thanks for the warning! I’ll try to set some aside for that while he’s gone. Love any practical tips. Deployment is hard enough without adding in other hassles :)
Quick question: (although Army might be different) – did they pay for your storage while you and the kids were up here?

    Andrea Reply:

Yes, the AF is reimbursing us for the storage. Definitely something to find out about if you are planning on moving up to NY! :) I so wish that our husband’s deployments had cooperated and lined up with each other!

Every move and the deployment our pay was messed up. Some of the time they would over pay us and we’d have to try to figure out what we were supposed to get and try to spend only that so we’d have it when they’d figured out their mistakes and then take it back or not pay us. This last time we had to send them a check for $2500. Thank god we saved it.
Hope they get it right soon.

When my husband went from enlisted to Warrant Officer they messed up everything! The kids and I got kicked out of Tricare and dental was screwed up for months! I’m really not looking forward to pay issues during our deployment in a couple months.

for us, we feel that it hasn’t been a year unless the Marine Corps hasn’t paid us for at least one pay period. Or pays us double and then we have a no pay due. Delightful.

We have lived here for almost four months, and still have yet to see COLA show up in his checks, plus a special pay he gets for being here. Luckily, we don’t need that money to make it.

For the new military wife that asked for advice, I will tell you the one thing that has made the difference for us: we got out of debt ASAP. Then, we saved rather than upping our living standard. We traded a dubious happiness with more things to the very good feeling of knowing we have some financial security to weather the inevitable pay problems that come with military life. I don’t regret that decision for an instant!
